Mark 1:1-13

  1. GOD ___________ HIS PEOPLE TO HIMSELF IN THE DESERT

Then say to Pharaoh, 'This is what the LORD says: Israel is my firstborn son,  and I told you, "Let my son go, so he may worship me." But you refused to let him go; so I will kill your firstborn son.'" Exodus 4:22-23 (NIV)

Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert of Shur. Exodus 15:22 (NIV)

  • GOD PROMISED A FUTURE ___________ INTO THE DESERT

"When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.  But the more I called Israel, the further they went from me. They sacrificed to the Baals and they burned incense to images. Hosea 11:1-2 (NIV)

  1. GOD USES THE DESERT TO ____________ HIS PEOPLE

The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. It is written in Isaiah the prophet: "I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way"-- a voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.'" Mark 1:1-3 (NIV)

And so John came, baptizing in the desert region and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins…..
And this was his message: "After me will come one more powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." Mark 1:4-8 (NIV)

  • GOD PROMISED A _________ RECONCILIATION

I will lead her into the desert and speak tenderly to her. There I will give her back her vineyards, and will make the Valley of Achor a door of hope. There she will sing as in the days of her youth, as in the day she came up out of Egypt. Hosea 2:14-15

Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the LORD's hand double for all her sins. A voice of one calling: "In the desert prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God. Isaiah 40:1-3

  1. JOHN CALLED PEOPLE TO ___________ TO GOD IN THE DESERT

  • JESUS WAS _______________ IN THE DESERT

At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. As Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.  And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased."

Mark 1:9-11 (NIV)

  • JESUS WAS _______________ IN THE DESERT
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet was without sin.  Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4:15-16 (NIV)

  • Have you been called by god to the desert?
  • Are you being shaped in the desert?
  • Do you need to return to God?
  • Are you being tempted in the desert?
  • Are you ready to be baptized in the desert?
